Short Term Mission Trips

When most people think about missionaries and those who travel across the globe to bring the word of God to those less fortunate, they tend to think in terms of the priests and nuns who dedicate their lives to living in some of the poorest areas of the world. While there are those who spend their lives living with the people they bring hope and help to with only the occasional trip home not all mission trips are for long periods of time. In fact the majority of them are short term missionary trips that bring extra bodies to help with larger project or often in the case of natural disaster relief. Over their summer breaks many college students are now taking the opportunity to volunteer to go on short term missionary trips as a way to help other who are less fortunate while they also earn extra college credits.

Not only do they earn credits but going on an international mission trip can be a very personally rewarding experience as you get to meet people of another culture and teach them about the ways of Christ while you help them with projects that will make their lives better. This truly is what being a Christian is all about, helping others who are less fortunate. You should however try to pick a short term mission trip that has at least some bearing on your course of study so that you can put your skills to work. For example if you are studying engineering you can help teach the people you are helping about water purification and how to build a more efficient water supply, Maybe you are an agriculture major, in which case you can help your new found friends learn new ways to plant and irrigate their crops so that they produce a more bountiful harvest. The possibilities are endless as you strive to share your knowledge and skills.

There are many reasons to take on the responsibilities of short term mission trips, you might be doing it to help spread the words of Christ as a good Christian or you may be doing so out of a strong desire to help those less fortunate than yourself. The reasons are personal and you do not need to tell anyone else why you have chosen to help only know that for whatever reason choosing to help other is the best way to make a positive difference in the world, whether you travel to Africa, Asia, South America or just go to one of the major cities of the US. Short term mission trips can be very rewarding no matter where you go, as there are plenty of people in the world who need a helping hand. It is just as important to help dig a new well in a remote African village as it is help rebuild a home in the Appalachian Mountains. If you would like to volunteer to help others contact Real Impact and join the hundreds of others lending a helping hand around the world.
